I recently spent a "springy" day with one of my good friends, Courtney and her adorable son Cooper. It was a perfect afternoon. We went to Thomasville, GA which sports an adorable little downtown full of shops and restaurants. Here are some picks of these two special people.

Ode to Chicago

Several weeks ago, my husband, Jason and I had one of those moments. You know, those moments when you realize that you will never experience this again, so you just revel in it.

Jason is not only an academic, but he is also a composer. In fact, composing choral music is his passion. He can get lost for hours, days at a time creating beautiful music.

We traveled to Chicago because of the talented and generous Dr. Bagley of University of Connecticut. He was conducting the National Men's Honor Choir for the American Choral Directors Association Annual Convention and commissioned Jason to write a piece for the choir to sing at the concert. This was quite an honor as Jason's piece would get to be performed by a choir of almost 300 of the best singers in the US; it would be performed in a stunning venue, the Auditorium Theatre; and his piece would be heard by 1000s attending the concert. We knew that it would be exciting but had no idea how touching it would be. We attended several of the rehearsals and were so enthralled with the way Dr. Bagley lead the men. He really demanded a lot of the choir and was so inspiring. The concert ended up being absolutely amazing. The recognition Jason received was very humbling. (He even signed autographs and had two offers to publish his piece). It was a special weekend we will always remember.

I found this adorable vintage apron at an antique mall for $5. All of the patchwork squares are vintage. It has a cute little ruffle and precious worn-out waist band. We will be moving in a few months and I think it might be the perfect thing to design a new kitchen around.

I am not a good blogger. Sorry. Lately, as with my sewing, blogging has been put on the back-burner. I don't know if it is because my mind if full of all the change that I am preparing for (we are going to be moving in a few months) or if I am just "tired" of keeping up. Regardless of the reason why, I am still here and will continue to post when the mood strikes. I know that is no way to build a "reader base" but that isn't really my goal. I think my goal in blogging is just to have another way to express myself creatively. I have found that my creativity only comes out when I am fully rested, do not have other things preoccupying my mind, and have no pressure to be creative. I am feeling relaxed this morning. Maybe it is the warm weather, the trees budding (I live in north Florida and it already is getting green), and having nothing I have to do this morning. Whatever the reason, the mood has struck, I think I'll do an Etsy post. I have been searching Etsy for some special things. Take a look at the fresh pretties I found:

Hot Dog! I finally started going through my Christmas pictures. I know, I know...it is already the end of January. But I had some good ones that I wanted to share. So here we are:

When my parents visited over Christmas we indulged in a bit of junk food at Dog et al in Tallahassee. This little mom-n-pop restaurant has been here for years. It is a simple place with a ton of personality. I do not often partake in this type of cuisine, but for special occasions (like baseball games or holidays) it is a treat.

We had a lot of fun visiting with my parents. We ate, we watched a bunch of movies, we exchanged gifts. It was relaxing and peaceful. Just the kind of holiday we all needed. This was our last holiday in Florida so I am so glad we got to spend it with some of my favorite people.

Isn't it sad how I often need an excuse to sew something for myself. My friend was having a party last week and asked that everyone bring an apron to wear in honor of the homemade Italian dinner she was making. Perfect! I have been waiting for an excuse to make a new apron. I used the pattern from the book "Sew Liberated" by Meg McElwee. I was enthralled with the cinched-in waist held together by a grommet corset. I used fabric from my favorite designer, Anna Maria Horner. I rather like the final product. Now...I am off to the kitchen to whip up something in my new apron.

I know we are in the middle of cold wintry weather, but I was in the mood for a bit of summer fashion. I love boots, jackets, and hats but nothing beats wearing a light summery top. My favorite stocking stuffer is magazine subscriptions. It is the gift that truly keeps on giving (for at least a year). I love getting magazines in the mail. It is such a treat to get home after work and find a new crisp magazine waiting to inspire me. It is like getting a surprise present in the mail every month. Right now I receive 4 magazines: Country Living, Real Simple, Better Homes and Gardens, and Ready Made. My favorite magazines are those that focus on thrifting and crafting. I love my magazines.

I am so excited. I finally figured out how to make my own tags for my bags. I used the logo that my husband created for me, a little sun that looks like a single piece of thread. In the past I had this super Etsy seller, mommiemadeit, make my tags. She was great, but I wanted to figure out how to do it myself. It wasn't too hard, either! I think I may do a tutorial soon to show you how I did it.

Broken Sewing Machine = Shop Update

Ok, I know I have not been sewing very much lately, but this weekend was going to be all about sewing. My husband's good friend was in town and they were going to be doing guys' stuff that I really didn't care about. It was going to be a good excuse to sew away to my hearts content. I had no worries, no cares. I didn't even have to worry about meals because the boys were going to take care of that. So I started to sew my first project and...snap, an important screw came loose (on my machine, guys). I tried with all my might to get it back together, but alas, it would not screw back. So I had to order the part and wait...until Nov. 2! So my sewing weekend turned out to be another kind of weekend all together. I ended up listing a bunch of new items in my vintage shop. Here's a peak at what is new.

So, it wasn't a weekend of sewing, but it was productive. I kinda had fun sitting in front of the computer all day-listening to Pandora while I edited photos. It feels good to finally have a vintage shop update. It's been a long time coming.

The sewing bug has got me again. I have been mulling over ideas and day dreaming about new bag designs for a while. I sewed a few goodies this weekend. One was for a shower for a soon-to-be new mother. I made her quilted burpcloths and wrapped a few of my favorite Sandra Boynton books in them: Moo Baa La La La and The Going to Bed Book. Sandra is one of my favorite authors of books for babies. They are silly and fun for adults to read and have adorable pictures. I called my gift "Books and Burpcloths for Baby". I hope she enjoys them!

Today we did something different. We went to The Muskogee East of the Mississippi River Intertribal Gathering in Sopchoppy, Florida. Sopchoppy is this very cool, tiny town about 15 miles south of us. It is a charming little place where they have a few stores: one IGA grocery store, one antique shop, one little bistro, one recording studio (I know, not what you usually find in tiny-town America), and a historical school where the Sopchoppy Opry performs. It really is quite charming and only takes about 30 seconds to drive through. Anyway, we decided to head out to this Intertribal Gathering at the Sopchoppy Park to see what we might find. It was really fun. The music and dancing were cool and the people were so very friendly. Lots of talking about Native American History which was really quite fascinating. Here are some pictures of the little tents set up with cool, unique items. It is not everyday that you find a hide for sale.

When we took our little weekend get-a-way to Seaside, FL, we came upon a whole lineup of food vendors selling out ofAirstreams across the street from the beach. A Treasury for Mamma

Sewing Sabbatical

I am not sure why, but the last month or so I have not wanted to sew. I have not wanted to do anything creative. Do you ever get that way? When all you want to do is hang out with the one you love and cuddle in front of the TV? That is how I feel lately. It guess maybe it is because of having a bit of an emotional month, but regardless, I feel a little guilty. Like I am letting myself down. Am I just burnt out? I want to want to sew again. I am sure it will come back. The Sunday Seamstress is still in there, I guess she is just taking a bit of a break right now.

Mini Vacations

Mamma and Pampa's Yard

Last summer I was visiting my Grandparents in Texas. Their home is full of such wonderful memories. There are many things about that house that I cherish, so I was inspired to take some pictures.

My Mamma will be moving to an assisted living home very soon. So I decided to take those pictures and do something special with them. 4 Simple Goals

So much has been going on the last few weeks. My husband just returned from a trip to Rwanda last week after a very sad and tragic event. While he was away from me, I did a lot of thinking. Even before he left, I was kind of going through some stuff, we both have been actually. Good stuff. The kind of thoughts and ideas that make you realize what is most important. Priorities, values, all those important life issues...we have been mulling over a lot lately. That is why I felt compelled to join in the 4 Simple Goals (before 2011....) group started by Elise Flannigan. I love her idea of making the goals positive and life enriching.

Here are my 4 goals:

1. Sew/Craft for pure pleasure at least once a month for me or my home...not just for my shops. I tend to try to keep up with making my "personal markets" fresh and new sometimes to the detriment of crafting for fun. Sewing is just a hobby for me. I have a job that keeps me really busy. Sometimes I get so caught up in trying to market and sell my wares that I lose the love of the craft.

2. Stretch everyday. Pilates, yoga, or just a good reaching for the toes. I get so stiff everyday and always feel good if I take some time to just breath deep and strrrreeetch!

3. Take a trip each month to St. Marks to see what has changed. St. Marks Wildlife Refuge is a wonderful swampy area close to home where the ocean meets the river. Complete with a lighthouse, alligator sightings, and amazing Dr. Suess-like foliage. This place is unlike any other. I always feel more alive and inspired after visiting this piece of the earth.

4. Call my sister more often. We are both a bit introverted and she is a very busy mother of three. In the last few months she has been a rock-solid friend. I love her so much and need to be proactive in keeping up with her life. Erin I am sorry, but I am going to be bugging you a bit more often.

Pretty Garbage

When I was taking out my trash this week, I noticed how lovely my garbage was. I know it is kinda strange. (Reminds me of the plastic bag scene on American Beauty. he he) After all the sewing I have done this week I had a whole bag of little scraps and clippings. It also made me feel like I had really achieved something...pretty garbage.

Texas Road Trippin'

I finally am ready to share some pictures of our trip to Texas. Many of you know that while I live in Florida, Texas is my home. After a few days in New Orleans, our road trip took us home. Home to open fields and beautiful blue skies...except for the Hurricane. We started our trip in Galveston where we met my parents and my sister's family just in time for Hurricane Alex. Though it was not anything like they got in south Texas, it kept us from spending our days laying out on the beach.

We went to NASA instead where there were demonstrations, movies, and hands on fun for the kids.

The clouds finally broke as we left the coast and we went on to visit Austin, San Antonio, and Fort Worth.

It was a great trip and I had the best time visiting with family; finally seeing my grandparents after way too long. Notice the photo behind them; their wedding picture.

We had great food the whole time...nothing beats Texas BBQ.

I loved spending time with my niece and nephews:

Natalie, who was difficult to take pictures of because she either made a face or hid.

Andrew, who took "hours" to decide what to spend his money on (there were just too many choices).

James, who learned how to sew like his aunt Krissy!

I also made a side trip to Oklahoma to catch up with my best friends. I want to share a few of those pictures with you later.

Jason and I had fun together despite the rain and busy schedule. We have really learned how to do road trips together. Some how driving across the country has a way of bringing two people closer. Though we were sick of the car we came away from the trip happy and renewed.

I love Spoonflower, a website created for every day people to print out their own designs on fabric. I recently did an experiment and sewed some of my painted fabric pieces together and then had them printed out at Spoonflower. I was inspired by Laura Gunn. The result is really unique, and I think fun. I do not know what I am going to do with the fabric, yet. I can't wait to create my next fabric on Spoonflower. I wish it cost a bit less but that keeps me from "impulse buying." I could easily spend all my extra cash printing my own fabric.

We have a friend on our front porch that has settled in for almost a month now. She doesn't pay us rent, but she is killing all those pesky mosquitoes for us. I thought she was really cool looking from the top and the bottom. I actually almost got a video of her eating a fly, but alas she dropped her lunch right after I pushed the record button. I am sure she was more frustrated than I was.

African Clutch Designed by....

I have created a new listing for my shop. A simple little clutch made with fabulous fabric that the customer gets to choose. The fun part about it (besides picking your own fabric) is that I am going to take 50% of the proceeds from each bag and give it to a charity that is near and dear to my heart.

Some of you may already know that my husband has been spending a good part of his summer for the last three years, in Rwanda. It all started with research for his dissertation, but it has become more than just that. It has been life changing. I was able to join him in Rwanda the summer of '08. While we were there we made so many amazing friends. One of the special souls that we had the privilege of meeting was Pastor David. Pastor David is one of those people that really makes an impression. He is a very gentle spirit with a huge heart. He has taken on many projects to try and improve the lives of others in his community. For example, he has an after school program for children, grows a very large garden to help sustain and support his neighbors, and he runs a program that teaches widows the art of tailoring so that they can learn a skill that will allow them to be self-sufficient and care for their families. He does this with kindness and compassion without seeking anything in return.

The women in Rwanda wear these stunning clothes created with African Wax-Print fabric. You see the fabric everywhere on the streets in Butare. It adds pops of color to the already beautiful landscape. While I was there I bought some fabric and my husband has also brought me back fabric from his trips. I now have a nice collection of this fabric.

I decided to use the fabric I have collected to raise a little money for Pastor David and his sewing school. So each time one of my custom bags sells, I will "sock away" 1/2 of it to send off to Pastor David. Here are some of the choices of fabrics that I have (I am hoping that Jason will get me a few more when he returns from his trip this year):

Rusty Gathered Wristlet

I'm trying to fill up my etsy shop with more goodies. Here is my latest wrislet. The fabric is by Laura Gunn, who inspires me greatly. I love the way her fabric collection looks like her paintings. It adds such texture and dimension to a flat piece of fabric. She inspired me to create my own painted fabric. I actually used one of my painted creations to create fabric that was printed at spoonflower. It is in the wash right now, so maybe tomorrow I'll show you?

While on vacation I was inspired to try some new hat designs. It was a bit of a challenge, not working with a pattern, but I think they turned out kinda cute. I would like to get better at the hat making process. I have dreams of being like Piper and Paisley or Sparky Jones. LOVE these two shops.

I spent some time today looking through all my vacation pictures. I took so many that I am a bit overwhelmed with what I want to share with all you nice people. It would've been a bit stressful had I not had the perfect treat to relax with.

One of the stops we made on our trip was to New Orleans. We had a great time (I will be sharing pictures). In New Orleans we had the most wonderful culinary experiences. Of course we had to visit Cafe Du Monde where we indulged in beignets and iced coffee. (It was too hot for anything other than iced). After eating there we promptly went and bought our own box of beignet mix and can of coffee to take home.

Today I pulled out the coffee pot that we hide away until we have company (I am a tea drinker)and I made Cafe Du Monde iced coffee. I have a feeling this coffee pot will be out on our counter a bit more often from now on. My drink was heavenly, especially after I added a squirt of chocolate. Yum!!!

Tutorial: Reusable Grocery Bag Pocket

Does anyone else have trouble remembering to take their reusable grocery bags to the store? I do! I realized that it would help me remember if I could just carry a bag easily in my purse. I have all of these slick, reusable bags that end up in the floor of the car on on the counter at home because they don't easily fold up and stay put in my purse. I decided to do something about it. Here is how I solved my problem. I made a little bag for my bag!

You will need:

pre-made reusable sack like these from Amazon

small fabric scrap (about 7x7 inches)

1/4 inch wide elastic

thread

sewing machine

Start with a 7 x 7 inch scrap of fabric.

(Your fabric square may need to be bigger, depending on the size of your bag.)

To form the casing:

fold over one side about 1/4 inch, then again about 1/2 inch. Press.

Stitch near the edge of the fold.

Cut about 4 3/4 inches of the elastic.

I put a large safety pin through the end to help pull it through the "tunnel.

Pull the elastic through being very careful...

...you don't want to pull the elastic all the way though.

Line up the edge of the elastic with the outside of the tunnel and stitch.

Back stitch several times to secure it.

Pull the elastic all the way through the other side and stitch that side down securely.

Fold your pocket in half, right sides together and pin.

Stitch around the edge leaving about a 1/2 inch seam.

I didn't want to mess with pretty seams so I just pinked the edges.

Pin the new pocket to the inside seam of your grocery sack

about 1-2 inches from the top of the bag.

Make sure to pin the pocket inside out.

I made that rookie mistake the first time and it wasn't cute!

Stitch the bag and pocket securely together.

I did two lines of stitching.

Walla! All stitched up.
Now, when your bag is emptied and you are ready throw it into your purse,

just tuck it into your little pocket...

Keep tucking...

There you go! Toss it in your purse and go. Now no excuses, you can't forget your reusable bags anymore!

The Little Things that make Life Sweet (or Unsweet)

It is funny how something as small as the glass you choose to drink out of can make your day. The small things really matter. For example, I always drink my morning tea from a certain mug on Saturday. I save that mug for Saturday I guess because it is my happy mug. I want to savor the relaxing morning. It is the only morning of the week where I am not completely zombie-like after waking up earlier than my body says I should have. On Saturdays I wake up feeling refreshed. I want the mug I use to drink my tea to match my relaxed state. It makes me happy.

It is funny how the little things can make your day. How great do you feel when you hear your favorite song on the radio, wear some new shoes, put a single rose from your garden on your table, pop a bag of popcorn with your rented movie, smell the earth right after a rain, or get an unexpected card in the mail? Sometimes the little things just happen to us; sometimes we create them.

Last week I bought a new cup. This one is not for my hot tea, but for my iced tea. Julie Guyot is an artist that sells her wares along side mine at Textures. I have always admired her work. Each of her pieces has such whimsy. She uses a lot of color, just a touch of vintage, and some unexpected elements. I love her style. Her items are perfect for creating that happy mood. I bought the tumbler above for those days when I need to create "a little thing" to make my day.

I haven't been thrifting in so long because I am anticipating moving sometime this year and do not need to add anything else to the pile of things that will go into my future garage sale. But I was down at the public library last week to get some audio books so that I could listen to them while sewing. And there next to our little county library was a large thrift store that I hadn't been to in over a year or more. I just had to check it out and once I did, I just had to buy somethings. I couldn't resist. I justified my purchases by thinking that I would sell them in my vintage shop...but I may just have to hold onto the owl pillow. He is too cute, and in my favorite colors.

Years have passed since then and so many things have changed. We are far apart. She's in Oklahoma, I'm in Florida, but I always know that she is there. My best friend is there for me. We share a love for garage sales (she is the queen of thrifting), we both enjoy crafts and beautiful blogs, we love watching fun TV ("Sex in the City" and "Twin Peaks"), we have traveled to exotic (Grand Cayman) and not so exotic (Hot Springs) locales, we have shared laughter, tears, hopes, and fears. Summer Vacation Circa 1982

Today was the first day of my summer vacation (I am a speech-language pathologist at a pre-school). I was searching through old photos and found these pictures of me, my sister, and mom on vacation in 1982 (dad was the photographer. He's good, huh?). It made me smile remembering how magical summer trips were for me as a child. I am anticipating the summer of 2010 will be a summer full of travel, family, friends, and romance. A summer with wonderful memories.

Last weekend I spent my Sunday stamping 6 inch squares with one of my carved stamps. I am so used to using fabrics with a lot of color so I decided these pretty, but plain prints needed a touch of color. So each square was painted with a different color combo. I love how they turned out. The next step is to figure out what to do with them. I thought about a bag, but I am not sure how colorfast the stamp ink is (I wouldn't want it rubbing off on someones white sweater). Do you think a journal or maybe an art quilt would be pretty? Tell me what you think. I'd love your ideas!

What to do with those Strawberries...

Ms Lindsay Brackeen inspired me to post about one of my favorite summer recipes. I absolutely love that time of year when the markets start to sell berries. I LOVE berries. Blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, and beautiful strawberries. I eat them all summer. One of my favorite, easy recipes is a strawberry salad. Here is what I do:

Toss Together:

1 bag of spring mix salad

about 1/2 cup of sliced almonds, chopped pecans, or chopped walnuts (toasted is even better)

about 1/4 cup of feta cheese

about 1/4 cup of chopped red onion

about 1 cup of sliced strawberries

Blend together (for dressing):

about 9 strawberries

1/3 cup of vegetable oil

1/4 cup of honey

2 tablespoons of lemon or grapefruit juice

2 tablespoons of cider vinegar

1 teaspoon of dry mustard

I sometimes grill a chicken breast to eat along side it, but always like a nice piece of crusty bread to sop up the delicious dressing. Hope you enjoy it!

So here's how the drawing went down. My hubby was the witness (and photographer). He made sure to keep me honest and be sure the drawing wasn't rigged. The numbers were written on bits of old wallpaper and put into one of my own "wallpapered" boxes.

The bits of paper were mixed up and tossed about.

I closed my eyes and reached into the box. I kinda ruffled up the papers before I pulled out...

Pockets Anyone?

I was commissioned to create a bag for a friend of mine. She makes jewelry and wanted a bag that would carry all her jars of beads and jewelry making supplies. I stitched together this bag using a basic tote design. I added pleated pockets, 6 on each side for the jars-o-beads and then one on each end, for a grand total of 14 outside pockets. I trimmed the pockets with a mustard fabric to highlight the shape. I think it added a cute "ruffled" look to the bag.

I made these lightweight pieces for my mom. She has a trip coming up and is trying to travel light. She asked that I make her something that would go with the black and red in her wardrobe. I have always wanted to print my own fabric. The book "Printing by Hand" by Lena Corwin is part of my collection. I love the book and it has been inspiring, but it wasn't until I read the hand carved stamp tutorial from Geninne's Art Blog, that I decided to give carving stamps a try. Geninne made it look so easy...I used my birthday money from my in-laws (thanks guys!) and stocked up on needed supplies.

I am so excited! Here are the first two stamps that I have ever carved! Thanks Geninne for helping me to take the plunge. I think I found a new hobby.

I have a bit of an addiction to crafting books, I admit it. It is the same reason that I love to look at beautiful blogs. How-to books are just like my favorite blogs in that there is so much inspiration on each page. The difference is that I can hold them in my hands. I can comfortably read them in bed. I can take them to the beach.

Crafting books have taught me something that is invaluable, they taught me how to sew. Of course, my mother taught me sewing basics. She showed me how to stitch a straight line. I made some pretty good pillows after her instructions, thanks mom! But craft books have taught me the rest. I learned how to gather and how to do patchwork. I learned how to print and how to paint on fabric.

It is no wonder I am addicted to collecting them. The wonderful women who have written the books have become my teachers; the kind of teachers that you grow to love and admire. The ones that you want to "become". Craft books saved me in a sense. I know that sounds dramatic...but if feels that way at times. Do you ever feel the same way about something? My sweet grandmother gave me this pattern a while back. From 1970, it is an easy, yet stylish way to dress. I love the simplicity of the shift. Put on a pair of flats and you are out the door. Yesterday my sewing theme was "remake" and "reuse". I enjoy sewing things that involve using fabric in new ways. I absolutely love using up my scraps to make pretty little things, like in this bright and sunny scrap clutch.

I also love to take random pieces of thrifted fabric and make them fresh and new like in this little clutch I made with a vintage pillow case.

Also, I've taken a liking to painting old fabric it until it looks completely different like in this tribal orange clutch.

Jason and I both celebrated our birthdays this week. We decided to go out and celebrate by hanging out in the sun and sand; but no waves. The water was still a bit too cold for swimming. We laid around on our beach towels and read books. Then after we had enough sun we took off to the little town of Apalachicola. We ate a dinner of oysters, shrimp, and crab cakes at Boss Oyster. Yum! After dinner we strolled around the town square and stopped in a malt shop for some ice cream cones. Double Yum! It was a grand day. How did you spend your Saturday?

Picking, a Dream Job

I have a new favorite show. If you are a thrifter, a garage sale junkie, or a vintage hoarder; if you love to go on adventures and hunt for treasures; if you like to get your hands dirty all in the name of discovering something that others would pay top dollar for...you need to check out "American Pickers" on the History Channel. It is a cross between "Cash in the Attic" and "Dirty Jobs."

I love garage saling. Around where I live, the garage sales are always few and far between. If there are some, they are usually in a modern house with people who are trying to get rid of stuff that they bought at Walmart in the last few years. I get such a rush when I follow a garage sale sign and find that the house is at least 50 years old and therefore the stuff inside might be old as well. Oh the possibilities...the treasures that await my picking.

Because of the limited amount of good garage sales around me, there have been times when I pass by old houses (like the one from this post) and wish I could just ask the owners if I can scavenge their house for goodies. What is so cool about "American Pickers" is that they do just that. They knock on doors and explain that they want to go through the owners old barns, warehouses, shops, etc. to find items they would like to purchase. What a dream job. I wonder how you get into that line of work? Watch the show and you will want to go picking, too!

I drive by this old house all the time. It sits in an open field surrounded by a forest of trees. Old houses are always fascinating; they tell a story of a life I can't quite wrap my brain around. They are usually full of old treasures and memories. This house speaks to me because of its bold color. It stands out amongst the browns and greens of the earth around it. Who was the lively soul that picked turquoise blue for the siding of their house? I probably had something in common with them. We shared a favorite color.

I needed some new pillows for my living room and I wanted to stitch them up quick before company came. I had 4 pillow forms and about 10 pieces of fabric that I wanted to adorn them in. In my indecisiveness, I narrowed my fabric choices down to 8 and made the pillows reversible. That way, I could easily change my mind, which a woman has a right to do.

I love my home, Texas, but there is nothing like the first of spring in Tallahassee. This afternoon, while showing my devotion to my home state by wearing my Texas hat, I set out to take a few pictures of my current neighborhood. These pics were my favorites. It was overcast which made the greens on the trees kinda glow. I love this part of the country.

I made these two library totes last week...thought I'd let you take a peek before I set out to sewing something else this Sunday:

This was made from an old quilt top that someone had already pieced together and left behind. The fabrics must have been bits and pieces of leftovers from the previous owner. They were all randomly sized and the colors even clashed a bit. That is why I like it.

It carries with it a vintage and bohemian quality.

Oh, how I love hats! I think they can be so fun. Flirty, stylish, and fabulous. I really wanted to try to sew some, so I went searching for a great book with hat patterns. The best book I could find was this one. It has an abundance of hat patterns, wonderful pictures, great diagrams, really the whole shebang, the only problem is...it is in Japanese. I don't know a lick of Japanese. Regardless, I bought the book assuming that I could figure it out enough to produce some cute headgear.

I have been semi-successful. I started with what I thought would be the easiest pattern. It has great diagrams and full pattern pieces, but it was difficult to figure out important details like seam allowances and such. I did it anyway by making a muslin mock-up first to measure it and see if it came together correctly. It worked well enough and now I have a new bucket hat! It is reversible, too! I am proud of my first hat and my ability to sew in Japanese.

This is my bucket hat embellished with vintage fabric, lace, and buttons. Here are some more of the cute hats I can make if I can figure out how:

My husband just announced to me that in his prospectus for his dissertation, which he has been desperately trying to finish by tonight, he has 110,657 letters, 20,561 words, and is 70 pages double spaced. Ick! I would and could never achieve such a feat. He is about to send it off to his committee chair. In honor of this momentous occasion...I have found a few etsy items that he might appreciate.

I tend to wear my PJ's around the house all the time and lately I have noticed that they are getting pretty worn. I really needed to buy some new boxer-type shorts for lounging, but why buy them when you can make them? This is my first of many new shorts. Who knew they were sooo easy to make? I should have a drawer full of them by the end of the month.

Today I got busy making some new totes for Textures. I hope to have several to take to Maggie next weekend. Making big bags is new for me. I usually make little bags because I find big bags should have zippers and pockets and all. I don't really like sewing those little details. I get bored with them. But this tote is fun and not too tedious. And people can always use a good tote bag. I am calling it the "library tote" because it is the perfect size for magazines and books.

A Picture Paints a Compound Word

I found this great stack of 44 pictures at my school the other day. They are compound word puzzles from the early 80s. I love them because of the bright colors and retro art. I am thinking that they would be so cute in a child's room or play room. Maybe 9 of them laid out in a grid pattern and framed with simple white frames. Or hung across a wall with string and clothes pins to easily change them out. Perfect. Now the only thing missing is the kid.

Bold Bags and Bracelets

This weekend I was busy in my sewing room. I finished my 2 amber wristlets, made 3 ruffle cuffs, 12 braided bracelets, and one new tote, for me! (well the tote anyway) It was great and my poor sewing room is in shambles now. Fabric piled up, patterns strewn across the floor, bits of string and scraps caught in the carpet; scissors, tape measures, pin holders...you get the idea. I should get in there and clean it right away, but I feel a bit tired so I am just gonna save that for another day. This is was I made out of that mess:

Strictly Business Card

Yippee! My new business card stamp arrived today! I decided to go with a simple stamp because I didn't want to rely on (or pay) some other person to create a card for me right now. I could have just printed them out on my computer, but I love the way stamps look. They look a bit worn and smudged, a bit vintage.

The logo from my stamp was sketched up by my creative husband. It is meant to subtly resemble a sun that is embroidered by a single piece of thread. A nod to my shop's name, sewnsunday. The creator of my stamp was Jessica Lynn from JLMould. She did a wonderful job! I would highly recommend you work with her on your next stamp creation.

I decided to put my stamp on some bright textured cardstock. I think it is bold and simple. Hopefully it will grab people's attention and they will stick one in their purse when they are shopping at Textures.
